New England is the home of a number of beautiful cathedrals, the cathedrae of the various Roman Catholic dioceses located in this region.
One of these cathedrals is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Burlington, Vermont, seat of the Diocese of Burlington.
The diocese was created in 1852, and Saint Mary's Church (established in 1830) was chosen as the seat of the diocese. However, due to the growing Catholic population in the city, a new cathedral parish was establish, and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception became the first church in New England to be designed and created as a cathedral church. It was dedicated on 8 December 1867.
On the night of 13 March 1972, the structure was destroyed by fire. The current cathedral was completed in 1977.
