Chanukah and Latkes

Son Joseph mentioned that, this past week, he made latkes for the first time (in preparation for a Chanukah party that he and his fiancée, Stefanie, were hosting).

Recently in his blog (A Concord Pastor Comments), Father Austin Fleming wrote a bit about Chanukah, the eight-day festival of light that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, of purity over adulteration, of spirituality over materiality. Among a number of other items in his post, he mentioned latkes. It turns out that latkes have an interesting background of which I was unaware.

On a side note, although I have never tried to make latkes, some time ago I tried to make regular potato pancakes. Dad used to make really great ones, but mine were spectacularly not great (I don’t know if Joe remembers.) There’s a recipe for German potato pancakes in the Family Recipes book Mom gave us. I don’t know if this is the same recipe Dad used, but it might be worth a try. (It does call for the use of a blender, which could be a problem.)

On another side note, Father Fleming mentioned a version of “The Dreidel Song” that he thought set a good festive mood. That version may be accessed by visiting:
