The Standard-Times of New Bedford, MA, recently ran an interesting profile about New Bedford Patrolman Charles Perry and his poetry writing.
One note that struck me was that, at one point as a high school student, he dropped his initial poetry efforts after a adult spoke negatively about his poems. Years later, others encouraged him to continue his writing. Each case is an example of the power of the words we speak - the power to tear down and the power to lift up.
