Many, if not most, school districts have heard about the so-called “funding cliff” - the time when federal stimulus dollars run out, state and local tax revenues have stalled, and local property taxes have been “relieved” to help community members, leaving schools scrambling to make drastic cuts.
The May 2011 issue of American School Board Journal examines how school district leaders can survive the funding cliff, and create fair and consistent funding systems for the future.
“State and federal funding formulas and mandates have become so complex that they hamper the abilities of school leaders to make the right call when times are tough,” said ASBJ’s Editor-in-Chief Glenn Cook in a prepared statement. “What makes this situation tougher to navigate is the lack of flexibility school board members have in spending what limited funds they do have.”
A related article by two University of Oregon professors, meanwhile, looks at the impact of budget cuts on schools and their staff, and finds that job satisfaction among teachers and administrators is falling, with the potential for burn-out high.
