The Danbury, CT, Fire Department was recently awarded a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Staffing For Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant in the amount of $2,184,351.00 to hire a dozen new firefighters.
The SAFER Grants were created to provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations in order to help them increase the number of trained, "front line" firefighters available in their communities. The goal of SAFER is to
enhance the local fire departments' abilities to comply with staffing, response, and operational standards established by the NFPA and OSHA (NFPA 1710 and/or NFPA 1720 and OSHA 1910.134).
Hiring grants may be used to rehire firefighters to restore front-line staffing to prior levels (rehiring laid-off firefighters, retaining firefighters facing layoffs, filling attrited positions) or to hire new firefighters to increase front-line staffing (Firefighter I certification is required within twelve months of employment; Firefighter II certification required within 24 months). Recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighter grants may be used to create a net increase in the number of trained, certified, and competent firefighters or to retain current firefighters.
