According to the Smart Growth weekly newsletter, while suburban neighborhoods built around cul-de-sacs are typically considered to be quiet, safe places to raise a family, some researchers say the isolation they engender leads to traffic congestion, more crime, and perhaps poor health. Researchers also found that people who live in more sparse, tree-pattern communities drive about 18 percent more than people who live in more traditional and denser grid-based communities.
