One of the presentations at this year’s Fire-Rescue International Conference, sponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs, focused on fireground mistakes that lead to injury or death and on practices that may preclude these errors.
In his presentation, retired fire chief Rich Gasaway, Ph.D., advised that these errors included attempting to perform to many high risk activities with too few persons (rectified by calling additional units early, or, if they are already on the way, waiting until they arrive), not taking time to evaluate (“size-up”) the incident before proceeding with firefighting activities, and taking shortcuts in training that, in turn, leads to impressing incorrect procedures in the memories of the firefighters (rectified by training that is realistic, repetitive and emotional).
