“Much like our own woeful Republic, the Roman Empire in late antiquity suffered from moral exhaustion and was beginning to show signs of its eventual collapse. Amidst that decay, St. Martin of Tours (c.336-397) embodied the Christian valor necessary to sustain and rebuild authentic Christian culture.”
Today, 11 November, is the date the Church celebrates the memory of Saint Martin of Tours, bishop (and patron saint of soldiers).
In a recent commentary, Dr. John P. Bequette, Associate Professor of Theology, University of Saint Francis (Fort Wayne, Indiana), reflected on the collapse of the cultural foundation of Rome (including its virtue) and, consequently, the collapse of its civic life. He contrasts this with the Church cultivating an alternative culture and an alternative civic life, with its Christian valor rooted in humility. Dr. Bequette furthers reflects on how Saint Martin embodies this Christian valor and sets an example for us in our time.
