Scammers may use COVID-19 as an opportunity to steal one's identity and
commit Medicare fraud. In some cases, they might tell a Medicare recipient that they will send a Coronavirus test, masks, and/or other items in exchange for one's Medicare number or personal information. Be wary of unsolicited requests
for Medicare number or other personal information.
It is important to always guard one's Medicare card like a credit card and
check Medicare claims summary forms for errors. One should only give one's
Medicare number to participating Medicare pharmacists, primary and
specialty care doctors, or people one trusts to work with Medicare on his/her
behalf. (Medicare will never call a Medicare recipient to ask for or check his/her
Medicare number.)
