Among the treasures of New England are its people who reach out, individually and/or as part of an organized effort, to help others and their various initiatives. One such program, Freshplace in Hartford, CT, was recently profiled by Hartford Courant columnist Susan Campbell.
Freshplace is a collaborative project of the Chrysalis Center, Foodshare, and The Junior League of Hartford. It is desogned to be an innovative food pantry that aims to tackle the issues of chronic hunger in Hartford. It is the result of five years of planning and operates under "the watchful eye of University of Connecticut researchers." Freshplace members can get food there and, in an effort to move clients into greater self-sufficiency and less reliance on welfare benefits, they may also take cooking classes, enroll in job training, and access social services that might help move them up the ladder.
