In a recent message to "'Bound to Live Together': Religions and Culture in Dialogue," an interreligious meeting of prayer for peace sponsored by the Catholic lay Community of Sant'Egidio, Pope Benedict XVI warns that we can make the planet into a hell by failing to accept one another, or we can learn to live together, open up, and give ourselves.

This reminds me of an incident when I was a student at Providence College. In my sophomore year I was randomly assigned two roommates. As it turns out, we had somewhat different life styles (the many years in between have blurred the memories of what these differences were).
Because of our differences, the two of them strongly suggested that I ask for another room assignment. I refused, reasoning that - if we could not learn to live together on our individual level - how our nations supposed to live together in peace. We ended up staying together, and our relationship did improve.
