As I was returning home yesterday evening, I was awaiting a bus on North Main Street (in front of the Old State House, which is adjacent to the North Main Street fire station in Providence). The sounds of sirens and air horns gradually filled the air, and, as the on-duty crews came out of the fire station, a procession including three Providence Police vehicles, a large number of motorcycles, several pink fire trucks and police cars, and Providence Engine 11 came by.
I was blessed to catch the Pink Heals Tour - the Pink Fire Truck Tour which is currently driving across the U.S. to raise awareness of cancer in women. On Monday, the tour visited Brattleboro, VT; on Tuesday and Wednesday, it visited sites in Connecticut and Massachusetts. The tour is will visit a number of sites during four days (Thursday-Sunday) in Rhode Island.
Today the tour is heading toGarden City Shopping Center in Cranston, where a 3:00 PM parade of trucks will be led by the Rhode Island Professional Firefighters Pipes & Drums; the event itself is scheduled to last until 8:00 PM. At noon on Saturday, the tour will arrive at the Warwick Mall in Warwick, and on Sunday it will be at the Twin River Casino in Lincoln from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM .The event at the casino will also include a car show with over 300 cars, participation by the Gloria Gemma Foundation, and other activities.
