(Editor's note: I attempted to publish this yesterday afternoon, but the website hosting this blog was having issues of some type.)
As our 9/11 anniversary commemoration continues, I offer Celine Dion singing "God Bless America" during the America: A Tribute to Heroes benefit concert on 21 September 2001:
America: A Tribute to Heroes was a benefit concert organized by producer Joel Gallen and actor George Clooney and broadcast by the four major United States television networks in the aftermath of the attacks on the World Trade Center and The Pentagon. Done in the style of a telethon, it featured a number of national and international entertainers performing to raise money for the victims and their families, particularly but not limited to the New York City firefighters and New York City police officers. It aired 21 September 2001, uninterrupted and commercial-free. (It was later released on compact disc and DVD.)
The concert was performed on a dark stage illuminated by hundreds of candles and included twenty-one artists performing songs of mourning and hope; in addition, a number of actors and other celebrities delivered short spoken messages. The musical performances took place at three studios in Los Angeles (CBS Television City), New York, and London, while the celebrity messages took place at Los Angeles. Some of the musicians also worked on the phone banks taking pledges. The money raised amounted to over $200 million, and was given to the United Way's September 11 Telethon Fund.
