Happy Birthday, Smokey Bear

On Thursday, 9 August, Smokey Bear (often called Smokey the Bear or Smokey) celebrated his 68th birthday. Smokey was first used as a poster character in August of 1944 and is considered to be one of the most widely recognized characters in the world.

Since he was introduced to America in 1944, the efforts of the Smokey campaign (including his message, “Only YOU can prevent forest fires!”) have contributed to reducing the number of acres burned annually in wildfires from 22 million to an average of 6.5 million.
