Cameras on Connecticut School Buses Catch Flashing Red Light Violators

In 2011, the Connecticut General Assembly passed a law (Public Act 11-255) that allowed communities to authorize traffic surveillance video cameras on school buses for the purpose of issuing summonses for drivers who fail to stop for the flashing red signal lights on the school buses.

Six communities (Hamden, New Britain, New Canaan, West Hartford, Windsor, and Wolcott) have installed such cameras, and other communities are considering doing so. The fine for a first-time offense is $450.00.

Rhode Island law also allows such use of video cameras.
