The Massachusetts Cultural Council recently approved the establishment of four new cultural districts in Cambridge (Central Square Cultural District), Essex (Essex River Cultural District), Marlborough (Downtown Marlborough Cultural District), and Sandwich (Glass Town Cultural District).
A cultural district is a compact, walkable area of a community with a concentration of cultural facilities, activities, and assets. The Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Cultural Districts Initiative grew out of an economic stimulus bill passed by the Massachusetts Legislature in 2010. It is designed to help communities attract artists and cultural enterprises, encourage business and job growth, expand tourism, preserve and reuse historic buildings, enhance property values, and foster local cultural development.
Previously designated cultural districts include the HyArts Cultural District in Barnstable, the Fenway Cultural District in Boston, the Rocky Neck Cultural District in Gloucester, the Central Exchange Cultural District in Lynn, the Upstreet Cultural District in Pittsfield, and the Rockport Cultural District in Rockport.
