New IAFC Insurance Planning Guide Focuses on Department Sustainability

The Volunteer & Combination Officers Section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs is offering a new publication, An Insurance Planning Guide for Emergency Service Organizations: Preparing for When Bad Things Happen …To Us, a free resource designed to help fire departments navigate the insurance landscape.

The report focuses on helping readers understand a fire department’s potential insurance needs that support sustainability in the event of an emergency, whether it be natural, manufactured, or administrative in nature. It addresses protection of all department assets, from buildings and vehicles to data and personnel.

The resource includes:

  • A basic understanding of insurance: what’s available, how it works;
  • Unique insurance considerations of fire departments;
  • The relationship between insurance and risk-management principles and continuity-of-operations planning;
  • Forty potential threats to fire departments and how to insure against them;
  • A number of tools to help assess departmental insurance needs; and
  • A state-by-state breakdown on worker’s compensation.
