"We live in an urban state, with land more valuable for developers
than farmers. But some still hold on, so last week I drove to Tiverton
to see Pete Peckham.
"He is almost 80, and grows potatoes on 160
acres sloping down to the Sakonnet River. Peckham would be a rich man
were he marketing his land as house lots today, but years ago, he sold
the development rights forever to the state.
"He'd rather farm."
