BCBSRI Offers Tips for Protecting Oneself and Preventing the Spread of COVID-19

While there have been several reported cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Department of Health has stated the risk of individuals in our state contracting the virus is low. Even though the risk is low, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) is offering a number of important tips for protecting oneself and preventing the spread of COVID-19, flu, and other diseases.

These recommendations include:

1. Taking everyday steps to limit the spread of germs, including:
  • Washing hands often throughout the day (if water and soap are not available, use alcohol-based hand gel);
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth;
  • Cough or sneeze into one's elbow;.
  • Keeping surfaces clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant, especially bedside tables, surfaces in the bathroom, and children;s toys; and
  • Getting plenty of sleep, being physically active, managing stress, drinking plenty of fluids, and eating nutritious foods.
2. Don't forget the flu - persons who have not gotten flu shot should get one. (In the U.S., flu is a bigger threat than COVID-19, with the CDC reporting 18,000 flu-related deaths this season.)
