Juneteenth

Today a number of people throughout the United States are celebrating Juneteenth,  a holiday observed in a number of states. The observance commemorates the date in 1865 when the Emancipation Proclamation, President Abraham Lincoln's proclamation that outlawed slavery in each of the states in rebellion on 1 January 1863, was proclaimed in Galveston, Texas, by U.S. Army General Gordon Granger. It is observed in a number of states as a commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States (which officially ended on 6 December 1865 with the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.
