On Saint Dominic on the 800th Anniversary of His Death

In addition to being the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, today the Church remembers Saint Dominic, founder of the Order of Preachers (who are known as the Dominicans). This year, his memory is being observed in a special way because it is the 800th anniversary of his passing.

Thanks be to God, I have three connections to St. Dominic:

  • my aunt and godmother, Sister M. Teresita Lopatosky, O.P, was a member of the Hawthorne Dominicans (she passed away on the feast of St. Dominic in 2001, a few weeks before her golden jubilee) and
  • I am a graduate of Providence College, the only college/university in the U.S. that is operated by the Dominican Friars.
  • Myrna and I are parishioners of Saint Pius V Parish in Providence, RI, a parish of the Dominican Friars.

Happy feast day to all of the followers of Saint Dominic.
