National Burn Awareness Week

This week, the week of 4-10 February, is being observed as National Burn Awareness Week, an observance is designed to provide an opportunity for burn, fire, and life safety educators to unite in sharing a common burn awareness and prevention message in their communities. The theme for this year's observance is "Spread Awareness for Preventing Flammable Liquid Burn Injuries."

Annually in the United States and Canada, approximately 450,000 people receive medical treatment for burn injuries.  The primary causes of injury include fire-flame, scalds, contact with hot objects, electrical and chemicals. Most of the injuries occur in the home. Most of those who suffer burn injuries will survive. Unfortunately, many of those survivors will sustain serious scarring, life-long physical disabilities, and adjustment difficulties.
