Msgr. Pope on Celebrating the Spirituals

"I’ve often been impressed at the capacity of the Old African American Spirituals to treat of serious matters in a clear yet almost joyful way. This is true even of very serious concepts like sin and judgment."

In a recent commentary, Monsignor Charles Pope (pastor of Holy Comforter-Saint Cyprian Parish, Washington, DC) reflected on the opportunity spirituals offer to encourage necessary conversations between preacher and congregation and between parents and their children about death, judgment, heaven, and hell.
