Wreaths Across America

A number of communities throughout New England will be participating in the Wreaths Across America program this year. The program, which honors our veterans at Arlington National Cemetery and over 600 other locations nationwide, will be held on Saturday, 15 December.

As of this date, we are aware of 132 participating local programs in New England, including 65 in Connecticut, 24 in Maine, 23 in Massachusetts, 10 in New Hampshire, 7 in Rhode Island, and 3 in Vermont.

Wreaths Across America, was formed as an extension of the Arlington Wreath Project.  The Arlington Wreath program was started by Morrill Worcester (Worcester Wreath Company, Harrington, ME) in 1992 with the donation and laying of 5000 Christmas wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery.  This became an annual journey for Mr. Worcester.

The project received national attention in 2005, when a photo of the headstones adorned with wreaths and covered in snow circulated around the Internet. Numerous requests poured in from all over the country from people wanting to carry out similar projects at their national, state, and local cemeteries. This led to the the creation of “Wreaths Across America™.

The Patriot Guard Riders volunteered to serve as an escort for the wreaths going to Arlington. This led to the annual “Veterans Honor Parade” that travels the east coast in December.

The Veterans Honor Parade – the procession of tractor-trailer trucks carrying the wreaths, along with escort vehicles – is scheduled to leave Maine on Sunday, 9 December, and is currently scheduled to make a number of stops in Maine and Massachusetts Sunday and Tuesday. In addition, there will be one contingent making stops in Connecticut on Tuesday and Wednesday.
