Today, 10 September, is being observed as World Suicide
Prevention Day, an observance sponsored by the International Association
for Suicide Prevention and co-sponsored by the World Health
Organization (WHO) and the World Federation for Mental Health. This
observance was established to raise awareness around the globe that
suicide can be prevented and to encourage action to prevent suicide.
According to WHO, the number of countries with national suicide prevention strategies has increased in the last five years, but the total number of countries with strategies, currently 38, is "still far too few and governments need to commit to establishing them."
