"Every night after supper my dad would be at the sink washing the dinner dishes. It didn't matter if he had been through a hard day or not. He simply filled the sink, and washed every pot and pan, every dish, every piece of cutlery by hand. He looked at it as his duty. My mom made dinner. He washed the dishes. It was an unspoken arrangement. . . .
"Around the same time my dad was teaching me that life lesson, the quote, 'Today is the first day of the rest of your life' became popular. They seemed to go hand in hand. What it suggested was that each new day offered you a clean slate. With each sunrise you could put the past behind you and begin anew."
In a recent column, Rev. Cal Lord, pastor of Central Baptist Church, Westerly, RI, reflected on the connection between his father's example and the message of Good Friday.
