WaterFire Providence Saluting Veterans

WaterFire Providence is holding a Salute to Veterans today (Saturday, 9 November). This event, in which expected to draw approximately 50,000 veterans, is considered to be the first ever community wide celebration of veterans on such a large scale in Rhode Island. It is to be a full WaterFire event lighting and solely devoted to saluting and honoring “our Veterans and all military personnel of the United States and their families.”

The WaterFire lighting was preceded by a Veterans Resource Fair (which opened at 3:30 PM) designed to be an informational and educational center about issues Veterans can face after serving in the military.

The WaterFire Lighting Ceremony includes a 100 Veteran Torch Procession and 200 Veteran Ring of Fire in Waterplace Basin. The procession is being led by the Rhode Island Professional Firefighters Pipes and Drums. It is including a a presentation of the colors as the National Anthem is played by the Navy Band Northeast and the 88th Army Band  on the basin stage.

In addition, at Memorial Park, Rolling Thunder Inc., RI Chapter 1 is sponsoring the Missing Man Table, which serves to honor the memory of fallen, missing or imprisoned military service members, and the Soldiers Cross.
