Rip Current Awareness Week

This week, the week of 2-8 June, is Rip Current Awareness Week. It’s theme is “Break The Grip of The Rip!”

Sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Sea Grant Program, the United States Lifesaving Association, and the National Park Service, Rip Current Awareness Week is designed to to heighten public awareness of rip currents at surf beaches. Rip currents are strong narrow currents moving away from shore, and the strongest ones may attain speeds reaching 8 feet per second. According to the United States Lifesaving Association, 80 percent of surf beach rescues are attributed to rip currents, and more than 100 people die annually from drowning in rip currents.
