Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Portland, ME

New England is the home of a number of beautiful cathedrals, the cathedrae of the various Roman Catholic dioceses located in this region.

One of these cathedrals is Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland, Maine. Construction of the original Cathedral began in 1866, and the walls were nearly completed when it was destroyed in the Great Fire of Portland (on 4 July 1866). Rebuilding the structure began in 1868, and the Cathedral was dedicated on 8 September 1869.
