New England’s Fire Service Heritage: Handtub Musters

A fire service tradition dating back to 1849 (in Bath, Maine) is a competition of hand drawn fire engines to see which engine can shoot a stream of water the longest distance. The competition involves hand pumping the water from a designated source, and the size and stamina of the crew (as well as wind conditions) are factors affecting the distance the stream is sent.
