During the closing session of the recent 2011 Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials-International Conference, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski announced a five step action plan to chart the transition to Next Generation 9-1-1 services. Working with the public safety community, carriers, manufacturers, and other service providers, the goal of this plan is to ensure that effective emergency response is a critical element of the broadband environment.
Elements of this plan, as announced by Chairman Genachowski, include
- developing location accuracy for Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG 9-1-1);
- enabling consumers to send text, photos, and videos to Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs);
- completing and implementing NG911 technical standards
- developing a governance framework for NG 9-1-1; and
- developing funding for NG 9-1-1.
