SRPEDD Report Advocates Consolidating 9-1-1 Dispatch Centers

The Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development District (SRPEDD), a regional planning district formed to plan for the future of southeastern Massachusetts (includes expansion of economic opportunity, protection of natural and historic resources, and development of excellent physical and cultural amenities), recently partnered with GeoComm, a consulting and engineering services firm, to evaluate the feasibility of combining emergency 9-1-1 communications services in the region.

Eighteen SRPEDD municipalities and one college participated in the study: the Cities of Taunton, New Bedford, and Fall River; and the Towns of Acushnet, Berkley, Dartmouth, Dighton, Easton, Fairhaven, Freetown, Lakeville, Mansfield, Marion, Middleborough, Norton, Raynham, Swansea, and Wareham; and the University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth. The project is funded by a grant from the Massachusetts State 9-1-1 Department, and it was administered by SRPEDD.

Among its proposals, the report recommended that many of the regional dispatch facilities be consolidated into two communications centers.
