In testimony before the United States Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs in its recent hearing on Understanding the Power of Social Media as a Communications Tool in the Aftermath of Disasters, witnesses spoke about the use of social media (such as Twitter, Facebook, and Google) by federal, state, and local agencies in disaster response. Among the topics they addressed were lessons learned during recent responses to tornadoes and storms in the South, improving two-way communication between the government and citizens, and recommendations for expanded use of social media by government agencies.
