Rocco Palmo on What It Means to Be an American Catholic

In a thoughtful commentary written on Independence Day, writer Rocco Palmo reflected on the relationship of the Church in America with the rest of country over the years.

In his post, Rocco included a 1790 letter written by President George Washington to the Catholics in the United States, an 1877 speech by the newly-installed Cardinal James Gibbons (Archbishop of Baltimore), and the closing remarks by Blessed Pope John Paul II on his September 1987 departure from Detroit (as he ended a two-week visit to the United States).
