Tomorrow (8 August) is the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Mount Washington Auto Road. This New England treasure, originally known as the Mount Washington Carriage Road, is considered to be the nation's oldest man-made tourist attraction.
This toll road goes to the top of Mount Washington from Route 16 in Pinkham Notch, in Coos County, NH. The length of the road is 7.6 miles, during which it climbs 4,618 feet (with an average gradient of 11.6%).
