"While watching TV these days I'm often bemused by some of the ads for
new medical treatments intended to treat a variety of conditions and
illnesses. While describing the benefits of these wonder drugs,
accompanied by a family-friendly scene and upbeat music, the announcer
often adds dire warnings like: 'Do not take this medicine if you are
allergic to it. This medication may result in anxiety and depression,
sleeplessness and hallucinations, dizziness and immobility, indigestion
and nausea, pain and paralysis, heart failure and shortness of breath.
It may cause your skin to turn green, your teeth to fall out, and result
in a sudden and painful death. Talk to your doctor to see if this
treatment is for you.'
"Umm . . . no thanks. I think I'll stick with the illness I have.
"A similar thing happens with ads for legal and financial services."
In a recent commentary, Bishop Thomas J. Tobin, of the Diocese of Providence
(RI), reflected on the fine print we often encounter and how the message of Jesus is very clear..
