For some time now, the Brattleboro, VT, Fire Department has been distributing free National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration radios to the residents of the town.
The radios were donated by the nuclear power plant, Vermont Yankee, to all the fire departments within the plant's evacuation zone. (Lately the plant has been in the news because of its efforts to remain open as the State of Vermont works to shut it down because of safety concerns.)
The radios are designed to receive NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards broadcasts, which include official Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts, and other hazard information. The broadcasting is done 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In addition to weather events, NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts warning and post-event information for all types of hazards – including natural (such as earthquakes or avalanches), environmental (such as chemical releases or oil spills), and public safety (such as AMBER alerts or 911 Telephone outages).
